there's no business like wood business!!

With the help of designing, providing a value to wood thinned from forests that have no value as noble wood.

Mr.Sawai a local proffesional mining engineer, understands our ecological challenge and cooperates with us.

This time he took us into the mountain in far north area of Hokkaido Island "Abashiri" region where the fist snow of the year was falling, and he found out and cut down a Japanese oak tree for us.

“This tree needs to be chopped down any time now.”

Muttering, he took down an 11m high tree from the mountain.

“Everyone leaves the mountain because they cannot earn a living by forestry. They will be astonished if they know that such a tree can be usable and get the money!.”

He said so happily while smoking a cigarette.

 

 Two 4m long woods and one 3m long wood were cut out of the fallen tree, and they are all transferred to Asahikawa city to be sawn up and slice for wood veneer.

私達のエコチャレンジを理解して,協力してくれる山師の澤井氏。
今回は、初雪が降る網走の紋別地方の山に一緒に入っていただき
一本の楢の木を切り出してもらった。

「そろそろこの木は切ってやらんとあかん。」
そう呟きながら１１ｍもの木を１本切り出し、山から降ろしてくれました。

「林業では食えなくなってみんな山から逃げていく。

こんな木が使いものになるってみんなが知ったら

腰抜かすだろうな・・・」


タバコを吸いながら
嬉しそうに語ってくれた。


４ｍ２本、３ｍ１本。
余すところなく旭川に運んで製材。

Tree Hanger ? or Tree Hugger?

 YASUTA Veneered Surfaces &Design, decided, on very short notice, to run a booth at LIVING & DESIGN 2010 SHOW which was convened in Osaka last month.
Our concept was “wood suggestion 2010” this time, and we would exhibit our design veneered panels inspirationally using remaining left over woods in the forest.

Our plan was to let the customers see our products with their feeling they would have when they chose their favorite cloths at a boutique.

Necessary things were wood chips to be spread on the ground, French chansons-pop music and hanger fixtures.

But, it was difficult to find enough sophisticated hangers.

At that time, my friend introduced me the company "On Off International Co.,Ltd", where they designed all the hangers by themselves and manufactured them in Japan piece by piece by taking advantage of artisan handmade skills.
I consulted with Mr. Makoto Takumiya who was the president of the company for advice and he proposed me the design that would match my image and we decided to adopt it.
They designed and manufactured our hangers in accordance with the exhibits though it was small lot production.

Then our booth decolation image was complately done with his designed hangers.

Mr. Takumiya represent his company "On Off international" is actively expanding his business targeting the European apparel business especially
in Milan and Paris as well as the business in Japan.

His products created from the feedback of his active development should be said as design items beyond hangers.

He said “it is my first experience to suspend the building materials”.

In his eyes, I could see the research-oriented mind to always challenge new things free from stereotypes.

On the other hand,our veneers must say that
" it is my first experience that I never expected to be hung up like clothes and must be the good article on Tree Hugger green page (^^;"

先月、大阪で開催されたLIVING & DESIGN SHOW。
急遽、弊社YASUTA VS+Dもブース出展をすることになった。
今回のコンセプトは wood suggestion 2010。林地残材を利用しデザインパネルを
インスピレーティブに展示する。ブティックで服を選ぶ感覚でパネルを観てもらう企画。
必要なものは、地面に敷き詰めるウッドチップ,フレンチシャンソンの音楽、そして
ハンガー什器。

しかし、このハンガー、センスのいいものが見当たらず苦労した。
そんな時、知人から紹介されたOn Off International社。
ハンガーを全て自社でデザインし、一本一本職人技を駆使し、日本国内で製造している。
代表の内匠屋氏に相談したところ、イメージに合うデザインを提案いただき採用に至り
小ロットにも関わらず展示物に合わせてデザイン、製造していただいた。

内匠屋氏率いるOn Off International 社は、国内だけではなく欧州アパレル業界をも
ビジネスターゲットにし、ミラノ、パリでも積極的に業務を展開している。
その展開からフィードバックされる製品群はハンガーという域を超えたひとつのデザインアイテム
と称すべきものである。

”建材を吊り下げるなんて初めての経験です”
彼の目には、既成観念にとらわれず常に新しいモノにチャレンジする
探究心がみなぎっていた。

突板からしても

marriage of design and art-craft

The marriage-hall Himeji Monolith has been established, renovating the old building of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication established in the beginning of the 20th. Century.
In the nostalgic atmosphere remaining from the good, old days, materials like wood
and ceramic, glass, fabric are employed skillfully, and the gorgeous decorations and
the delicate existence keep attracting minds of people who visit the place.













Mr. Kazuhiko Tarumi ( LADAKH DESIGN ASSOCIATES ) and his assistant assigned Mr.Shigeki Kawashima who always continuously searches high quality architecture with the expressiveness of the materials. By not only installing ready-made products born from mass production, he also keeps on searching his trials, considering how to transform the materials to “the figurative and designable arts” and how to create audaciousness. It expresses their sincere efforts on “each one of architecture”.

Our company was in charge of creating the wooden veneered wall panels. As for the reception counter, we filled the whole up with palissandar -veneered inlay, including the background on the wall, and as for the wall in front of the banquette, we assembled walnut like a mosaic with emphasis on the white sap. Those create an impressive wall surface like a piece of a picture, fusing the designer’s drawings and the wood.
We remember the “Arts and Craft movement” arose in England at the end of the 19th. Century. As this movement gave birth to L’Art Noveau architecture, aiming a recovery of the craftsman mentality in the period, where the industry shifted to mass production, we suppose that the designers like Mr.Tarumi, supporting the possibilities of the materials, will give birth to the new modernism to go down to history.

The harmonize of “designer’s idea” and “craftsman’s skills”.
They two got married with every visitor’s blessings here in Himeji Monilith !!.

昭和初期建造の旧通信省の建物をリノベーションした結婚式場「姫路モノリス」。古きよき時代のノスタルジックな雰囲気の中に、木、ガラス、セラミック、ファブリック等の素材を上手く現代風に落としこみ、その華麗なる装飾と優美なる存在感で訪れる人々の心をときめかし続ける。

質の高い建築と、それに対して常に“素材”の表現力を追求するラダック　デザイン　アソシエイツの垂見和彦氏。大量生産から生まれる既製品を単にインストールして終始するのではなく、素材をいかに“造形”に変え、独創性を造り出し得るか？という垂見氏の挑戦を、担当の川島司外季氏が素材メーカーとともに追い求め実現する。そこには“ひとつひとつの建築”に対する彼らの真剣な想いが現れている。 弊社が製作担当した木目パネル。レセプションカウンターは、壁面の背景を含め、全体をパリサンダーの突板象厳で埋め尽くし、バンケット前室の壁面は、白太をアクセントに用いたウオールナットでモザイク風に組み上げた。デザイナーの描くデザインが木と融合し、一枚の絵のように印象的な壁面を演出している。

１９世紀後半にイギリスで興ったアーツ＆クラフト運動。大量生産へと産業が移り変わる時代に職人的なもの作りの復権を目指したこの運動が、アールヌーヴォ建築を誕生させたように、素材に造形の可能性を後押しする垂見氏のようなでデザイナーが、これからも歴史に残る新たなモダニズムを生んでいくのだろうと感じる。

INFIX makes it GREEN !!

We visited forests at home and abroad to find destruction and loss of forests.The current situation is that deforestation, land clearing, industrial development, and abandonment of forest are unavoidable because the forest doesn’t turn a profit enough.The world’s forests will disappear in the future unless we energize them.　
That’s the reason why we YASUTA VS+D started activities to make efficient use of timber from forests.We manufacture excess timber which aren’t profitable with our ideas and technology, and give back the profit to forests and mountains. We also spend the funds on developing healthy forests for continuous supply of timber. Today, what lacks for Japanese forest industry is the “money flow”, which we think is the key to sustainable design.There may be little we can do, but if this belief spreads through society, it may energize more forests, mountains, and people who are working there...
Our new concept veneered plywood “LOHAS WOOD SERIES” was established with that hope.“Eco Design” is attracting attention in recent years.


Many of the designs were just processing natural materials with too much consciousness of nature, and had no idea of “ designing wood”.We use sustainable timber as well as incorporate it into design and balance design with ecology.We would like to give our sincere respect and appreciation to Designer. Yoshihiko Mamiya ( infix design inc. )who primarily empathized with the new design of sustainable tree we propose and adopted it into the brilliant projects.

国内外の森を歩き、森の荒廃や消滅をあからさまに見つめてきた私たちYASUTA VS+D。そこには、森では十分に経済的採算が取れないために、やむなく乱伐採や管理放棄、また農地化や工業地化が進むという現実があることを知りました。森を活性化させないと将来、世界の森はどんどん消えていく・・・。そんな危機感から私たちYASUTA VS+Dは森の樹の有効利用に取り組み始めたのです。
お金にならず放棄されたままの余った木を山から買い取り、私たちのアイデアや技術を加えることで製品化し、その売上を森や山に還元する。そしてその資金を基に、健康な森を育て、継続的な木材資源供給を促進してもらう・・・・。

wood suggestion 2010

Plywood coated in color decorated with thin wood-veneer pieces.The successful combination of material and the creator’s sense of beauty has changed even the original purpose of the plywood. This panel is a work of art, an exciting installation, more than mere architectural material.
This avant-garde decorated plywood was created by Ms.Yoko Miyaji, a clerk from YASUTA Veneered Surfaces & Design Co,.Ltd.
And this work was submitted to "Wood Suggestion 2010", an in-house competition .

What are the qualities of an excellent craftsman? Outstanding skills, selfless effort and infinite enthusiasm… However, the most important quality is a talent for embodying the demand of the age. In other words, craftsmen should always be sensitive to and be able to address the designers’ needs. However, YASUTA VS+D Company’s staff is not satisfied only with that. As well as completing the assignments, staff members as professionals in this field always look for new ways to use the materials and continue making new design proposals. Their pride as craftsmen drives them, and it looks like they even think of their tasks as fun.
Regarding the recent in-house competition, many products beyond the usual concept of wooden-veneered panels were created. (see flash below)

カラーリングされたベースに突き板を散りばめたプライウッド。
素材と感性をミックスさせ、そのモノの意味すら変革してしまう。
もはやこれは単なる建材ではない。パネル自身が刺激的なインスタレーションと化しているアートだ。
このアヴァンギャルドな化粧合板を手がたのは宮地陽子。YASUTA VS+Dの事務スタッフ。
YASUTA VS+D社内コンペとして開催されたwood suggestion 2010での作品である。

優れた職人に必要な資質とはなにか。卓越した技術、無償の努力、飽くな情熱…。しかし、いちばん必要なのは、時代が求めているものをカタチにする才能だ。すなわち、デザイナーの考えを敏感に理解して形にすることが常に彼らに求められる。

しかし、彼らのチャレンジはその域を超える。与えられた課題をクリアするだけではなく、スタッフ全員がその道のプロフェッショナルとして、常に素材の可能性を追求し、新しいデザインを提案しつづける。 そこには職人としての誇りがあり、そして彼らの楽しみとさえ感じられる光景がある。 今回のコンペでも突板パネルの概念をうち破る製品が多く作られた。

将来は雑誌"wallpaper"で紹介されるようなプロフェッショナルになりたい。
若いスタッフはそう語った。

memories, the time-line dynamics

Takemura Dental Clinic designed by Mr.Yasuo Imazu　(ninkipen architect office), a winner of the Design Award Rookie of the Year by JCD　(Japanese Commercial Environment Designers Associateion).
Partitions between dental chairs are made of guardrails covered with white fabric.In the space where these white partitions are successively installed, dentists wearing white coats carry out their day-to-day work.The veneer "Lohas Metopolitan Japanese Oak"s white lines that give a soft, natural impression are finely attuned to the wall.
“ As a small child, I used to go to a clinic when I had a fever. My doctor, a white-haired man, was always smiling in a white coat. His armed chair and my round chair were both covered with white fabric. Oddly, these chairs made me feel comfortable and nervous at the same time. I tried to design the personality of each interior decoration element by reviving and visualizing the visitors’ old memories,” he says regarding the concept of this project. As long as the existing designs are merely visible, expressed in color and shape, this project has given them a very new dimension as it makes people moved and incorporates time-line dynamics, in other words, people’s memories.
The design industry has a mission to continue creating a new design. He successfully contributed to lead the new way by winning the award.

本年度ＪＣＤデザインアワード新人賞に輝いた今津康夫氏（一級建築士事務所ninkipen!)デザインの竹村歯科。診療チェアの間に立てたられた間仕切りは、ガードレールに白い布を被せて作られている。その白い間仕切りが連続した空間の中で、白衣を着たドクターが日常的に振る舞うという設定である。壁面に使われた突板（メトロポリタン楢）の白い線も、木と白の配色を見事に繋げている。

“幼い頃、熱が出ると通う診療所には、白髪のドクターが白衣を着て笑っていた。彼の座っている肘掛け付きの事務椅子とボクの座る丸椅子は、白い布カバーで被われていて、そこには不思議な安心感と緊張感が漂っていた。訪れる人の記憶に踏み込み、可視化させることで、それぞれのpersonalityをデザインしようと試みている。”彼はこのプロジェクトのコンセプトをこう語る。

今までのデザインが色や形で表現され,単に可視可能なる３次元のデザインだとすると、人の心を動かし、それだけではなく,"記憶"という時間軸をも巻き込んで組み立てらてたこのプロジェクトは、まさに新たな”次元”を加えたデザインといえるのではないだろうか。常に新しいものを作り続けるという使命をもつデザイン界。今回の入賞は、その世界に新たなる一石を投じる彼の偉業である。

Prize goes to Japanese!! :Milan Salone 2010

Architecture Sohei Arao(SIDES CORE) with his wife conducted the project of Bridal Venue "8G Minamihorie" last year in Osaka.
With the past experience they suffered to find their favorite bridal venue in the past, he try to design it combine beauty and functions adopt to the current trend.
They never approach their project looking at from one side based on the preconceived idea, but always approaching from various angles to find the it’s beauty and significance.

Architects or Designer have many selling points, but what is real design? Their design provides one convincing answer we could feel from their products.

In this Milan Salone, they accomplish a great achievement to win the prize of Design_Report Award.
The profile of “FRAMES_01” is the chair, looks origami floating in the air. But it has the enough strength and well designed by squeezing the thin metal.
And another profile of “LINK” is the pair of cutlery, looks simple but have unique form easy to handle and it lead the impression that the cutlery can make the pleasure of feeding meals, not as the tool to bring.
Architecture have to adapt to the surrounding environment, furniture has no such restriction.
Those their unique and beautiful products could be the small experimental approach reconsidering the missing important issue of the Life.

Last year. A new member was participated, their first daughter was born.We could expect incoming new ideas flash from their new happy family_life.

SIDES COREを主宰する荒尾宗平氏との出会いは一昨年のブライダル現場。同じくデザイナーであるご夫人と結婚される際に式場選びに苦労された経験を生かして、自分たちが必要とするデザインと機能を兼ね備えた会場をプロデュースされた。
既成概念にあらゆる角度からの視線を注ぎ新たなるデザイン、機能、そして楽しみを導くために、デザイナーが何を成すべきか成さぬべきか。ひとつの答えがこの彼らの作品にはある。
そんな彼らが今年のミラノサローネでデザインレポートアワードを受賞する偉業を成し遂げた。
薄い鋼板を捻じることで軽さ、強度、そしてデザインを見事に実現した椅子”FRAMES_01”。その椅子は横から見るとまるで宙に浮く折り紙のようだが座り心地はしっかりとしている。
白のベース上にディスプレイされたカトラリー“LINK”。一見シンプルなデザインであるが、その握りご心地や使い心地は従来のものとは明らかに違う。料理を口に運ぶ単なる道具ではなく、料理を口に“運ぶ”ことにを楽ませてくれるフィーリングを発見できる。
建築のデザインは周りの環境に合わせなければならないが家具や小物にはそういった制約はまったくない。既成概念を変えるアイデアを持った彼らの美しいプロダクトは日常生活で見逃されてきた大切な部分を見つめ直すアプローチ的な実験なのかもしれない。
昨年、彼らに娘さんが誕生し、新しいメンバーが加わった。新しい生活から生まれてくるであろう新たなデザインが更に楽しみである。

tree alives in town

A timber existing in a house in Tokyo. In fact this is not the timber, but the furniture made with Japanese Elm Veneer coming from Northern Island, Hokkaido.

This project is planned by Architects Mr.Kazuki Nakamura and Mr.Kenichi Izuhara (LEVEL Architects office) ,develop many private house adopting the detail demand of the clients.The idea they adopted is that they do not feature the regulated wood-grain, but with left over tree which have the defects like knots, unevenness grain. So the furniture shows the long the sense of being live itself.People is now recognizing the word of Sustainable Design, but LEVEL Architects steadily put into practice it by using such troublesome left over trees with their ability of Design.

東京の私邸に横たわる一本の大木。実は北海道大雪山系から切りだされた楡の木の突板で飾られたローキャビネットである。個人邸住宅を中心にクライアントのイメージを具現化する建築家ユニット LEVEL　ARCHITECTS の作品である。整然とした綺麗な木目を並べるのではなく、天然の樹が持つ自然な節や色斑、そして曲がりを意匠として取り入れ見事にライブ感あふれる家具を作り上げている。サスティナブルデザインが注目されつつある中、今まで林地残材として厄介者扱いされてきた間伐材をデザインというツールで見事に演出した一例である。
