wood suggestion 2010

Plywood coated in color decorated with thin wood-veneer pieces. The successful combination of material and the creator’s sense of beauty has changed even the original purpose of the plywood. This panel is a work of art, an exciting installation, more than mere architectural material.
This avant-garde decorated plywood was created by Ms.Yoko Miyaji, a clerk from YASUTA Veneered Surfaces & Design Co,.Ltd.
And this work was submitted to "Wood Suggestion 2010", an in-house competition .

What are the qualities of an excellent craftsman? Outstanding skills, selfless effort and infinite enthusiasm… However, the most important quality is a talent for embodying the demand of the age. In other words, craftsmen should always be sensitive to and be able to address the designers’ needs. However, YASUTA VS+D Company’s staff is not satisfied only with that. As well as completing the assignments, staff members as professionals in this field always look for new ways to use the materials and continue making new design proposals. Their pride as craftsmen drives them, and it looks like they even think of their tasks as fun.
Regarding the recent in-house competition, many products beyond the usual concept of wooden-veneered panels were created. (see flash below)

“In the future, I want to become a professional who is featured in the "Wallpaper" magazine, said a young staff member.

memories, the time-line dynamics

Takemura Dental Clinic designed by Mr.Yasuo Imazu (ninkipen architect office), a winner of the Design Award Rookie of the Year by JCD (Japanese Commercial Environment Designers Associateion).
Partitions between dental chairs are made of guardrails covered with white fabric. In the space where these white partitions are successively installed, dentists wearing white coats carry out their day-to-day work. The veneer "Lohas Metopolitan Japanese Oak"s white lines that give a soft, natural impression are finely attuned to the wall.
As a small child, I used to go to a clinic when I had a fever. My doctor, a white-haired man, was always smiling in a white coat. His armed chair and my round chair were both covered with white fabric. Oddly, these chairs made me feel comfortable and nervous at the same time. I tried to design the personality of each interior decoration element by reviving and visualizing the visitors’ old memories,”
he says regarding the concept of this project. As long as the existing designs are merely visible, expressed in color and shape, this project has given them a very new dimension as it makes people moved and incorporates time-line dynamics, in other words, people’s memories.
The design industry has a mission to continue creating a new design. He successfully contributed to lead the new way by winning the award.

Prize goes to Japanese!! :Milan Salone 2010

Architecture Sohei Arao(SIDES CORE) with his wife conducted the project of Bridal Venue "8G Minamihorie" last year in Osaka.
With the past experience they suffered to find their favorite bridal venue in the past, he try to design it combine beauty and functions adopt to the current trend.
They never approach their project looking at from one side based on the preconceived idea, but always approaching from various angles to find the it’s beauty and significance.

Architects or Designer have many selling points, but what is real design? Their design provides one convincing answer we could feel from their products.

In this Milan Salone, they accomplish a great achievement to win the prize of Design_Report Award.
The profile of “FRAMES_01” is the chair, looks origami floating in the air. But it has the enough strength and well designed by squeezing the thin metal.
And another profile of “LINK” is the pair of cutlery, looks simple but have unique form easy to handle and it lead the impression that the cutlery can make the pleasure of feeding meals, not as the tool to bring.

Architecture have to adapt to the surrounding environment, furniture has no such restriction.
Those their unique and beautiful products could be the small experimental approach reconsidering the missing important issue of the Life.

Last year. A new member was participated, their first daughter was born.We could expect incoming new ideas flash from their new happy family_life.

SIDES CORE

DNA of Kyoto-Tradition

KARAKAMI is an art paper that came from Tang Dynasty. It is a paper where various traditional patterns are block-printed by using mainly the powder of granitic crystal that gives off vague light and that made by grinding seashells. In Kyoto that is an ancient city of Japan, KARAKAMI had developed as KYO-KARAKAMI in the Edo era and been used in a temple and tea house, etc. and still have had fresh and sophisticated beauty.
Kakuo Matsumura (KAKUO Archtect Office , special assigned by his assistants Satoshi Kusakabe,Tsutomu Aoshima) who living in Kyoto incorporates his tasteful sensitivity of Kyoto-traditional into modern design well.
In the apartment that he worked on this time, he produced tasteful atmosphere of Kyoto-traditional well by engraving motif of flower whose language is the name of the apartment into a metal and harmonizing it with a wooden-veneered panel. It is his unique design that is analogical to KYO-KARAKAMI,and surely the tradition and culture of ancient city has been taking over with the DNA genom of such a outstanding young designers.

Breath of LOHAS

"LOHAS" is the one of the important key-word in the world of current interior-design scene.
The building "BREEZE Tower" opend last year in the gate of Osaka city is also the one of the building which accept the it's LOHAS concept.
The name, “BREEZÉ,” is a coined word based on “breeze” that means soyokaze in English. This naming derives from the structure which adopted glass as its overall exterior appearance and made natural ventilation due to wind possible.

"Bougnat Bougnat" is the café restaurant we can enjoy familiar culture and atmosphere of French café and Italian bar in this facility.
This cafe-restaurant was designed by Tomoji Kawano (Cong Design Office) and he well futured the stucco, natural woods, reclaimed woods, and other LOHAS matarials in order to adjust the it's delivering organic dishes and also to the LOHAS concept of this building.
It produces the feeling of LOHAS well based on the design of authentic European café style, and avoids lack of individuality that sometimes happens in such a motif and expresses playful mind by placing uneven chairs and the unique-sruface table made with "Metropolitan Style Veneer". There is a space that is full of animation and has originality, warmth, and comfortableness. Mr. Kawano demonstrates in this project that we can produce more enjoyable life style by incorporating design into LOHAS well.

For Whom the Chair Being

Kichiro Isoda ( Isoda architects office )is the premier interior coordinator assign to welfare living environment. He participate the interior design not only focus on design but how effective it worksto human. Now he is popular professor who conduct the seminar regarding to “Barrier Free”, not only for his client but also to the architects and surgical attendant.People often tend to think that barrier-free means simply eliminating difference in level for floors and mounting hand railings on walls so that elderly people can have comfortable lives. However, the barrier-free proposed by him indicates the reform designed to break down “barriers in mind”. For elderly people who tend to stay at home alone, his proposal is, for instance, to make nice living rooms where they are tempted to invite their friends or landscape gardens where they are tempted to go outside for taking care of plants. Even the life style could be change a lot by just setting the one comfortable chair in outside,he said!
The “happiness” of elderly people that he thinks is not a physical “convenience” but a whole “system to refresh themselves”. The residents who had his barrier-free reforms are vibrant as expected. It should be recognized as his original and unique"Universal Design" concept.
Even for elderly people, no difference in level and hand rails, for example, might be totally unnecessary.

Japanese Translation: ”
